An attractive location
not only for holidays on the farm! Steinau an der Straße, the Brothers Grimm fairy tale town, is located on the German Fairy Tale Route, in the south of Hesse, between the low mountain ranges of Vogelsberg, Rhön and Spessart, the largest contiguous mixed deciduous forest in Germany and home of the famous fairy tale collectors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm. The Brothers Grimm were born in Hanau, at the gateway to the Spessart. They grew up in Steinau, in the west of the low mountain range. Here you can experience stories about mysterious forests and medieval locations. But the region doesn’t just offer something for lovers of fairy tales. Other cultural highlights, premium hiking trails, mountain bike trails, brine thermal baths and other health and wellness offers guarantee a relaxing escape from everyday life.
Give me that beautiful life!

sights & culture
The famous fairy tale collectors Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm lived in Steinau from 1791 to 1789. Their residence, the Brothers Grimm House Steinau, is a modern museum about their life and work. Fairy tale city tours and fairy tale stories invite you into the fairy tale world of the Brothers Grimm.
England on the German Fairy Tale Route still has something magical to discover.
Steinau Castle is one of the few almost completely preserved early modern castle complexes. Guided tours take place here regularly.
Steinau used to be bankrupt on the important trade route between Frankfurt am Main and Leipzig, this was the largest east-west connection. This is why Steinau got its nickname “on the road”. Stations for this are shown in the Steinau Museum. Experience a “devilish” day with your family in Hesse’s oldest show and stalactite cave in Steinau an der Straße. Stalactites, stalagmites and strangely shaped stalagmites are typical structures of a stalactite cave. The Devil’s Cave is around 2.5 million years old and a geological natural monument.
In Unterreichenbach, 4.5 km away, you will find the “Dom von Vogelsberg”, as the church is called with over 10,000 seats.

leisure & sport
Steinau lies between the low mountain ranges of Föhn, Vogelsberg and Spessart and is therefore an ideal starting point for numerous sporting activities.
Hike on certified hiking trails such as the Spessartbogen, the historical “Eselsweg” trade route, around the Kinzig dam, to the Teufelshöhle or to the Hoherodskopf. Steinau is on several long-distance cycle paths, the Hessian long-distance cycle path R3 Main-Kinzig-Kreis, the volcano cycle path and the Spessart-Nord-Ost-Passage. In addition, cyclists who like to ride off the beaten track can test their skills in the Bad Orb flow trail.
In summer you can also let off steam in the Steinau adventure park and the Europa climbing forest. There is always something to experience in the Hessian Spessart Nature Park.
